Starting school in a new country can be challenging!
The SWIS program helps newcomer students & parents feel welcomed and supported in Canadian schools.
We offer Free Support in elementary & secondary schools in Kingston to make the transition easier.
Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)
The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program supports newcomer students (ages 4–18) and their families, in different languages, including Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs), Privately Sponsored Refugees (PSRs), and Convention Refugees as they adjust to school life and the broader community in Kingston
Our goal is to help families feel welcome, understand the Canadian education system, and ensure students are set up for success both in school and in the community.
How the SWIS Program Works:
- Intake and Needs Assessment
Every family begins with an intake where a settlement worker meets with them to understand their needs and the need of their children, answer questions, and identify the support that will help the students settle in school.
- Orientation to the Education System
We provide information about the different school boards, registration requirements, and expectations within Canadian schools. For parents of younger children, we work closely with them to explain processes and provide guidance. For older youth, we support them directly to help them adapt to their new school environment.
- School Registration and Transportation
Our staff help with registering children for school, applying for school bus service if eligible, and helping in navigating transportation options to access Kingston Transit bus passes for high school students.
- Community Access and Resources
We connect students and their families to community services that make settling easier, such as:- Public library memberships
- Summer camp registration for children and youth
- Family and cultural events that help build connections in the community
- Ongoing In-School Support
Settlement workers are available in schools to:- Provide one-on-one support for students and parents
- Connect families with resources and community programs
- Run group sessions on topics such as Canadian education culture, student success strategies, and community engagement
- Building Belonging and Confidence
Through our program, families and students gain confidence in navigating their new environment, feel encouraged to participate fully in school life, and reduce the stress of adjusting to a new country and education system.
